Here’s a few steps to looking after your leather jacket. Firstly, it is important to hang the jacket up when not in use, in a clothes bag, the one pictured above is Tyvek. Tyvek is a very strong material that is difficult to tear, it is also highly breathable – allowing water vapour to easily pass through. An alternative to Tyvek is muslin cotton which is a closely woven material produced from corded cotton yarn.
Secondly, the leather should be treated once a year or every couple of years, using such products as Pecard’s leather dressing, this keeps the leather moisturised, clean and in this instance, waterproofs the leather but at the same time allows the leather to breath. Other alternatives are Effekt Leder Gel, Leatherique Rejuvinator Oil (non-petroleum based that doesn’t darken the leather and is ideal if you don’t need waterproofing) and Mustang Paste which is made from horse oil.
Finally, to deter moths, it is a good idea to hang up a lavender satchet bag alongside the jacket, or in some instances a cedar block can be used, depending on which smell you prefer.
Where can I buy the sachet bag thing?
You can purchase them from most department stores, mine was from John Lewis, or anywhere which sells fragrances.
Thanks, I bought the cedar block!
